You're going to need to bring your sewing machine. You can purchase the materials you need from the store.

Fundamentals Sew Along - Week 39

Hi Everyone:

I hope you are all enjoying a taste of fall.  I love this time of year, snuggling up under a quilt, or better still hand quilting a new one.

This weeks block is called Janet's Star.  The first thing you will do is strip piece the two largest triangles together to make a square using colour 1 and 2.  Make four of these.

Piece Half Square Triangles Together
Next you will assemble your Flying Geese segments.  Make four of these.

Flying Geese Segments

Attach your Flying Geese segments to the rectangle (colour 3).

Flying Geese Segment + Rectangle
TIP:
When assembling the rectangle to the Flying Geese block, place the rectangle on the bottom.  It will slide over the feed dogs easier.  If you had the  Flying Geese portion  on the bottom chances are the seams would get caught on the feed dogs and flip over.  If there is any distortion of your Flying Geese block this is your opportunity to resolve it.   If you notice the picture below the Flying Geese block is a tiny bit smaller.  I was able to shift it a little and still keep my point on the Flying Geese portion.

Flying Geese On Top + Rectangle Segment
Lay out your block segments in the order that they belong.  I put them next to my sewing machine ready to go.

Block Layout
Sew your squares into rows.

This is your finished block.

Fundamentals Sew Along - Week 38

Hi Everyone:

Today's block is called Ohio Friendship Quilt.  It is actually quite similar to the block that we did last week, although we have reversed the colours and the flying geese portion of the block is also reversed so it doesn't resemble a star.

The corner portion of the block is  a four patch using all three of the colours.  Two of the cream coloured squares mixed with one square of each of the other 2 colours.

Tree Color Four Patch Block Segments
Next you will  sew 2 half square triangles to a quarter square triangle to make a flying geese segment

.

Flying Geese Segments
Attach the rectangle to your flying geese segment creating a square.  Arrange your segments according to your pattern (see picture below) making sure the the dark square in your 4 patch is in the outer corner.

Block Segments
Your finished block will look like this.

See you next week everyone!

Fundamentals Sew - Along Week 37

Hi Everyone:

Well, the kids are back to school and people (including myself) are looking for classes to join and projects to start.  For all the people that finish their projects before they start a new one we are nearing the home stretch for this quilt.  We are almost 3/4's finished!

This weeks block is called Big T.  It looks complicated, but when you break it down into segments, it is quite simple. First sew your light and dark small squares together to make a rectangle. Then you will join the light rectangles to your pieced rectangle turning the segment back into a square.  Make 4 of these and set aside.

The next block segment is the Flying Geese portion.  Join the small triangle to the large triangle.

Next, join the other small triangle to the other side of the large triangle.  Press.  Make 4 of these.  And set aside.

Join flying geese segments to colour # 2 rectangle.  Make 4 of these and set aside.  All of your segments should be square.  Arrange them according to the diagram in your pattern and piece into rows.

Fundamentals Sew - Along Week 36

Hi Evereryone:

I hope you all had a great Labour Day Weekend!  The summer went far too quickly but I must admit I am ready for fall.   There are so many projects on my to do list and sooo many projects to finish. Once  the weather cools down and the gardening subsides there is no stopping me.

This weeks block is called Whirling Five Patch.  It is similar to the block that we did last week.  It has the same triangle in a triangle segment.

First you will need to piece two triangles using fabric 1 and fabric 3.  Press them and make 4.

Half Square Triangle Squares
The next step is to piece another triangle to this segment.  Chain piecing will speed up the process. Clip the segments apart and then press.

Chain Pieced Triangle Segments

Chain piece another triangle, completing the pieced triangle segment.  Clip apart and press.

Chain Pieced Segments

Your pieced triangle should be the same size as the large triangle that you cut out.  Join these two together to make a square.

Join Pieced Triangle To  Large Triangle
Sew  rectangles to opposite sides of the square.  This will for the center row.  Join the other two rectangles between the pieced half square triangle squares.  See diagram below.

Row Segments
Piece the rows together creating your block.

Thanks for your comment on last weeks block Sooli.  I think it is nice as well.  Do you prefer this weeks over last weeks, they are quite similar.  Anita, it is my little piece of heaven!  I have been going there for 40 years.  Lots of great memories and have worked on lots of quilts up there in the past few years.

     Have a great week everyone!
