Fundamentals Sew Along - Week 7

Hi Everyone! Today we had our 7th sew along at the store. In answer to last week's question, Anonymous said he/she couldn't find the mistake. It wasn't easy to spot, but if you look closely at the second picture I talk about the square sewn, trimmed and pressed in place. Then sew the second square in the same fashion. My mistake was, that I sewed and trimmed the square but didn't flip it and press before I added the second square. Unfortunately, reverse sewing was the only answer.

The creative juices are really starting to flow in the group. I know there are only two versions of this quilt to pick from, but I bet there will be numerous versions when we are all finished. Anita is putting her own spin on this project. She is putting in some of her own 30's fabrics, as well as collecting some reds and black 30's prints that she wants to include. These are some of her blocks. Aren't they beautiful?

I know Magnolia you are concerned about the stonehenge colours being too dark. Don't worry. I like your idea of adding in some blue. I would love to see your blocks. Today's block pattern could be changed a little if you wanted. I have posted some pictures (below) of an idea that I thought might look good. Don't be afraid of changing things up a little.

Instead of putting all brown triangles in the cream square I thought I might change it up a little. What do you think? Do you like this version or the finished version below?

Another tip, for those of you who are working by hand. When marking your pieces, put a piece of fine sand paper under you work. It will help to keep thinks from slipping.

Darlene made this 44" X 48" Bargello Wave baby quilt from 1 package of fat quarters plus a third of a metre for the border. She says, "There was less than 2 inches of wastage from all ten fat quarters. It was quite interesting to do as the smallest strip is 7/8 of an inch. I used the same fabric sequences as was arranged at you fabric store. One of the other girls is doing the same quilt but has changed a couple of the colors around to make it different from mine.

Fundamentals sew along - week 6

Hi Everyone,
I hope everyone had a great week with lots of time to sew. I still haven't had time to start my stonehenge blocks, but I am sure you will agree that the blocks for the store look great. Maybe this week I will be able to carve out a little time to do this.

This week's block was a lot of fun. It is a very easy way of constructing star blocks. The process is the same as last week. Putting a small square in the corner of a larger square and sewing diagonally across creating a triangle. Don't worry Magnolia, you are not geometrically challenged.

The diagram above should help. If you want another short cut, you could press your squares diagonally turning them into triangles. Then open them up and use your crease as your sewing line. Once you have pieced your triangles onto your rectangle you have a choice. You can either cut away the seam allowance, or leave it in and just press in place. It will be a little bit bulkier if you leave it in but if you are not hand quilting through it I wouldn't worry. I find there is less distortion this way.

Fundamentals Sew Along - Week 5

Hi Everyone, Can you believe it is the 1st of February? It really doesn't feel much like winter, not that I am complaining.

Thank you for your stories. I have heard the one about the fat quarters being free samples. I don't think I would get away with that one in my house. Don't worry about the stonehenge being too dark Magnolia, there are many more light blocks to come.

Stitch on the pencil line

This week's block will go together very quickly. First you will need to draw a line with a fabric marking pencil diagonally across all 8 small blocks. This will be your sewing line. Then place the small block in the corner of the large block and sew along the pencil line. See diagram above. I strip pieced these blocks which made things come together quicker. You will sew 2 small squares to each large square. Refer to your pattern for color placement.

When you trim your blocks make sure that you cut on the correct side of the stitching line or you will be in trouble. This will be your finished product.

Fundamentals Sew Along - Week 4

Another week, another block done. We are still early in this journey but the enthusiasim is building. I noticed in the comments that golfergranny said she has already picked out her sashing. Love to see pictures of the fabric. It might help get the creative juices flowing for the rest of us. You know when you go to a quilt show and see the most beautiful quilt, and the colours in it are the last thing you would choose but it looks fabulous? It gets us thinking outside of the box.

I also want to thank you for taking the time to vote. I was having a hard time making the decision as to which colour way to do. Stonehenge is the winner! Now I will have to get caught up.

I thought I would show what we have done so far. That's the 1930s on the left and Stonehenge on the right. We are only 4 blocks in so if you want to regsiter it will be easy enough to catch up!

This was todays block: Blazing Trail

This weeks block is Blazing Trail; it was a fun one block to do. It was a little more time consuming than the others, but it came together nicely. I pieced the Stonehenge block first. I constructed the four nine patch units individually then assembled them together to make one large block.

I did the 30's block in class and thought I might speed things up by strip piecing but I found the pressing got confusing.

I pieced together the three columns and then assembled them into a block. It was worth the try but in the future I will stick to the tried and true pattern.

Fundamentals Sew Along - Week 3

Hi everyone; Third block done, 49 more to go. I know this might sound daunting, but really, spend one morning a week make a block and a year later you will have a beautiful quilt. This morning in the sew along we discussed the fact most small sewing groups that get together, work by hand. And when you work by machine it is more isolating. To get together with machines and sew and socialize, the block came together in no time. With the buzzing of the machines you really feel productive. We still have room if you want to join us. For those of you that are following along online, try a machine get-together with a quilting friend.

Betweens had a question last week about the size of the block. It will be 7 1/2" finished. There are 50 blocks in the quilt, and you will be making 52.

We had lots of responses to last weeks question, and I think every 30's color had a mention. Congratulations LM you are the winner. Email us to claim your prize.

The tip of the week comes from Gail, one of our sew along members. She has been using Best Press on all of her fabrics. It is a starch alternative. I love it for applique but never thought to use it for piecing. Her blocks are so crisp. She also said she waters it down a little so it goes farther. I think I will have to try this.

Last week I told you about the tonne of new fabric that came in and suggested that since Arnold Schwartzenegger was newly unemployed that he might want to come in and help us. Well as it turned out we have someone even better working for us and her name is Carol! She is working hard to get all the fabric up and online as quickly as it comes in. Here are three new groups!

How Much is a Tonne?

I know that I am always writing that we just got in a "tonne of new fabric". It is just one of my favourite expressions. Well this week we literally got in a tonne of fabric...that is 2,275 pounds of it!

Jeannie says we need to hire a big guy to help us! Arnold Schwarzenegger is newly out of office...maybe he wants the job!

Fundamentals Sew Along - Week 2

Hi Everyone!

Thank you so much for your feedback on our first block. I was quite surprised, I really thought that the thirties would take this one. It was a close race, but in the end stonehenge won the popularity contest.
We just finished the second sew along and it is so much fun to see the blocks come together. You will notice on page 2 of your directions the diagram indicates which way to press your seams. This really takes the guess work out of things. It means your seams will lock together and make it much easier to assemble the block.

Fundamentals Sew Along - Week 1

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you are as excited as I am to start the New Year off participating in the sew along. If you haven't already signed up there is still time. My only New Year's resolution this year is that I will be here every Wednesday for the next 52 weeks to walk you through the blocks in this quilt.

There are two colourways to choose from, Stonehenge and the 30's fabrics. When I was asked to do this project I thought it would be a perfect project for the Stonehenge line. But I have to admit the thirties line looks fantastic as well. See for yourself.

We will start off with some easy blocks just to get our feet wet, then slowly move into the more complex blocks. The first block is a variation of the nine patch. I must say after many years of strip piecing nine patch blocks I really enjoyed putting them together square by square. It forces you to slow it down and my accuracy improved.

To achieve a really accurate block you need to perfect your 1/4" seam allowance. An exact 1/4" seam is one of the keys to getting perfect blocks everytime.

If you have a quarter inch foot for your machine, this is the time to use it. It will look something like this:

The new ones have a guide on the right side of the foot that keeps you fabric aligned. If you don't have one you might consider picking one up from your machine dealer.

If you don't have the foot another great way to get an accurate 1/4" seam is to measure over a quarter of an inch from your needle and place a piece of Sewing Edge on the bed of your machine and it too will guide your fabric. I have used painters tape in the past to do this job but the Sewing Edge won't leave any residue on your machine and they are reusable so they are a very useful tool!

Pressing as you go is also very important, not only does it keeps things looking neat and tidy, visually you will be able to see if you are being accurate if everything is lying flat. It will also help you when it comes to piecing. If you press your seams to the dark side then when you assemble them they will lock together where the seams meet. It really is a great trick.

Fundamentals Sew Along A Block of the Week Program Beginning in January 2012.

I am going to introduce our guest blogger today! Jeannie Jenkins is our assistant manager in the shop and will be hosting the Fundamentals Sew Along program starting in January. We are very excited about this program. Every Wednesday Jeannie will be posting here on the blog with some tips, tricks, tidbits and giveaways on a journey to make a beautiful sampler quilt. Without further ado here is Jeannie to tell you all about the program:

Each Wednesday I will be hosting a sew-along. We will meet in the classroom from 10:00 - 11:30 am to make a block AND I will do a blogpost too. Whether you follow along online or drop by the store you will be sure to learn a lot of new techniques and most importantly have a lot of fun.

I have been collecting the Stonehenge line of fabric for quite some time, and I think this is the perfect project for it. Samplers are so much fun: they really are a great way of learning how to do the various blocks and they are so pretty when they are done. By the time we finish the program we will have 52 blocks, enough to make a quilt. Whether you are a confident beginner or have a number of quilts under your belt you are all welcome to join. I don't know if I can wait until January to Start! But I will. I hope you will join me.
You can choose between two colorways: Stonehenge and 1930s reproductions. The quilt shown above uses a different fabric collection. Here are stonehenge fabrics we have chosen:

Summer Project Update!

My bowl is full to overflowing so I have started sticking on my squares. I need to make 4 panels measuring 40" x 4.5 metres (!!) to get the quilt to king size. I spent about 5 hours getting this much done which when sewn will be a 24" square and used 625 out of the 14,000+ squares I have cut! It's a great beginning but boy do I have a long way to go!

Summer Project Update - A Design Crisis

Well the Magpie has had me chopping squares like crazy and my bowl is really getting full...I it is time to start sticking the squares down! I have no idea how many are in the bowl ... but in the thousands for sure! I know it looks like a standard mixing bowl but it is huge...14" diameter...you have to compare it to your own mixing bowls to get the gist of how big that really is!

In the beginning there were only a few squares...

The bowl filled slowly but steadily...

The bowl is nearly full...how many squares do you think it contains?

In anticipation of starting the ironing stage - we came to the conclusion that doing it on point would just be too complicated for a king sized quilt (the issue is seaming huge panels together). My plan is to make 4 90 inch by 90 inch panels - then sew them which will reduce them to 60 by 60 and then sew those 4 together which will give me a 120 x 120 king sized quilt (don't worry I'll do step by step photos when I get to that!). If I do it on point the joins would have to be diagonal and I think it is just too big to try something like that!

Maybe next week we'll photograph Magpie's project too!

I was actually sketching out ideas for this line at the beach this summer. It's a good thing I really like Christmas, it didn't take much to put me in a holiday mood, even in 90 degree weather. I remember sitting in the living room at the beach house, making up stories with my kids about the little forest animals, wondering out loud what they do on Christmas eve. I imagined them gathering in the forest for a tree trimming party, laughing and singing, and then solemnly processing to a midnight church service, while singing "The First Noel." Here is the "story" I wrote:

What happens in the forest on Christmas Eve? Do the inhabitants perceive what a special and divine night it is? Sometimes I imagine the little creatures gathering with their family & friends much like we do.... Making merry, basking in the comfort of one another's company, singing their favorite hymns and carols. Perhaps they gaze upon the indigo sky, and search for that One Special Star... and delight in the sentiments of the season- Joy, Love, Peace, Noel.

Summer Project Update - An Intervention

Alright - I promised updates on my summer project but could not find the camera because my family moved. The camera has been unpacked so now I will give you the update. I decided that I would make a postage stamp quilt (using 1 inch squares) for our new King Sized bed. I have a very large stash of 1930s fabrics so I thought the best thing to do would be to alternate 1930s with Kona Snow (a winter white coloured solid from Robert Kaufman that just happens to be my favourite background fabric).

First thing is first I am going to show some pictures of my 1930s fabrics...I really couldn't capture the sheer vastness of how much of it I actually have. Here is one small box of scraps.

boy did it ever get grubby in storage during the move!
PS - we finished unpacking that room on Sunday :o)

I started out by cutting some of the smaller scraps and sorting them by colour into my muffin cups.

Somewhere around this time I figured it would be more fun to work on my summer project with a friend so I invited the Magpie over to quilt every Thursday night!

Magpie is nothing if not a realist and informed me that if I didn't pick up the pace and stop futzying around cutting one little square at a time that not only wouldn't I finish my quilt this summer - I wouldn't finish it this lifetime (ouch!). Magpie gave me an extension on my project (until October) and set out a clearer path for getting the project done - what would we do without friends?

Step One: Grab the biggest vessel in the house which happens to be our gigantic salad bowl.

Step Two: Dump all squares into the bowl

Step Three: Start strip cutting to fill the bowl as quickly as possible (well I didn't quite get to that yet - I kept cutting up my little leftovers but I will start ironing and cutting larger pieces this week).

Stay tuned for more progress as the Magpie tries to get me going faster in the blistering heat!

Summer Project - A Decision Has Been Made!

Alright! Summer is here and I had to make a hard decision. Each summer I tackle a big project...I guess there is an argument to be made that since my family moved this week that should count as my summer project but I have decided to make a big quilt too! My goal is to make a king sized postage stamp quilt using my embarassingly large stash of 1930s repros (I would take a picture and show it to you but my camera is still packed in a box somewhere - I promise to take a picture of it ASAP).

I was seriously considering doing Crab Apple Hill's latest Calendula Patterdrip's Cottage but since I haven't finished the Winter Twitterings quilt yet I didn't think it was such a good idea to take on another big stitchery.

For years I have been admiring vintage postage stamp quilts and this is the year I am going to make one!

What Happens When A Quilter Meets the Big Red Balls?

Hi Everyone! Last summer I was lucky enough to be one of 260 Canadians selected from over 40,000 (!!) applicants to be a contestant on Wipeout Canada. For those of you who aren't familiar with it Wipeout Canada is a hilarious game show where contestants run the world’s largest -- and funniest -- obstacle course. Each week, 20 new competitors tackle the course in an effort to be named Wipeout Canada Champion. They come from all walks of life, shapes and sizes - male and female, young and old, fit and not-so-fit.

The hilarious hosts provide running commentary as the contestants navigate the course. In the qualifier, 20 contestants run a four-part obstacle course including challenges like the "Sucker Punch" (a wall of boxing gloves that randomly punch contestants as they try to run past) and the fan favourite "Big Red Balls". Only the 12 with the fastest times move on to the next round. Along the way, spectacular wipeouts occur!

Here I am attempting to get out of the mud! Have you ever seen so much mud on one quilter? I have to say that this is about as much fun as I have ever had but I am definately more comfortable at my sewing machine than running an obstacle course!

Twisting at Sew Sisters!

Every once in awhile we quilters need to try something new and have a little fun. This week Mary and I whipped up this cheerful little quilt using a package of citrus moda marble charms and the Little Twister Tool! It really was very easy and Twister toll made it a whole lot of fun!

First you sew together all the charms and sew on a little 3" border.

Second, you use the Twister Tool to cut out the pinwheel blocks.

Third you sew the pinwheels back together ...

Last but not least...add a couple of borders and voila ... a cute and easy little quilt!

A quick investigation revealed that I was time stamping my blog with Vancouver, rather than Toronto, time. Oopsie ...now it's corrected and no one has to worry that I'm not getting enough sleep!

Newsflash: Husband Appreciates Sew-Sisters

Hello Judy

Here is a story for you.
For some time now my husband & children realized I come home from your store in a very happy mood, however my husband has a new found appreciation for your store because of 2 recent repair jobs I did for him.

Lite Steam-A-Seam 2 came to the rescue when I had to do a difficult patching job to 2 pairs of his favourite brand of jeans. Yesterday morning I saw him carefully inspecting all of his jeans for a long time and asked him what he was doing. He said he wanted to dress casually for work but didn't want to wear "repaired" jeans so he was trying to figure out which ones were repaired and which ones were not. I told him if he couldn't find the repaired areas after such a long search no one would notice them either so it didn't matter which ones he wore. He thought for a moment, and then laughed in agreement.

When I picked up the big box of batting from your store recently with his help, he didn't know what was in the box. Last weekend I repaired his sleeping bag (yes he goes winter camping, I do not). The inner lining of the sleeping bag was torn & the batting was in bad shape, but I was able to insert a couple of layers of the batting I purchased using the batting tape I bought during my last visit. I inserted a new fleece lining and quilted the repaired area. He was impressed and pleased with the result.

So...it's not only women who appreciate your store.
