Do you like Redwork?

Did you know that Redwork Embroidery has quite a history? Rissa Peace Root has a very well written article: A Redwork Embroidery Primer where she explains the history and evolution of Redwork and provides some great links too. 

Combining stitchery into quilts is quite a trend with quilters both traditional and modern. Learning the basic stitches and techniques will help you create your very own unique quilts.  

The images below are from the Redwork Winter Twitterings Block of the Month Program we had at the store. The program was so popular we had to run it twice!

Class: Paper Piecing by Machine

Paper piecing is a technique of sewing oversize fabric pieces to a paper foundation.  This allows you to make accurate patchwork blocks easily and quickly without making any templates. During class you will be given some sample patterns and work on completing some easy blocks.  Suitable for beginners or anyone wanting to learn machine paper piecing.  

You're going to need to bring your sewing machine. You can purchase the materials you need from the store.

Beginner Quiltmaking by Machine

The Wednesday batch of the Beginner Quiltmaking by Machine class has just run through their seven sessions and some of them have completed their quilts! Aren't they gorgeous? 

They certainly had a great time together and we're sure friendships have been forged for life. :)

The Tuesday batch is also getting along. Here's Ella basting her quilt with Jeannie.

Expansion Update

This is what the store looks like right now but we are happy to say we are functionally normally even with the hole in the wall. Look at all that space behind the cover... that's going to have more fabric! 

You can still find what you need.

So after the wonderful young men moved all the concrete blocks Fred (Judy's dad) and Karen ripped out the carpet. Can you see the long blocks of floor boards in the kitchen? They're waiting to be laid out. 

We're happy to say our classroom is up and running. It's bigger and brighter and seven wonderful ladies took a Machine Quilting class there this afternoon.

Learn to Paper Piece in 2 hours!

Introduction to Paper Piecing

Paper piecing is a technique of sewing oversize fabric pieces to a paper foundation. This allows you to make accurate patchwork blocks easily and quickly without making any templates! 

The class will be held on Tuesday, May 8th from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.

That's right! It's only a two hour class! 

You will be given simple patterns to work on during the class and you'll go home with completed blocks! 

You will need to bring in your sewing machine. 

Fee: $20

Jeannie's Beginner Quiltmaking by Machine class is on in April!!! 

Jeannie will take you through the basics of making your very own quilt by machine. You'll learn to rotary cut, piece, assemble the top, sandwich the quilt, quilt, and bind! And after only 7 sessions you'll go home with this beautiful quilt!

Classes are on:

Tuesday Evenings from 6:00 – 8:00 beginning on April 3rd  (7 Sessions)

Class Fees: $99.00 (class material not included)

You will need to bring your own sewing machine.

Coming this Week...

This week we have several classes running...there is still a little room left if you would like to join us please give us a call... 416 633-8800...

On Monday we have the Strawberry Social. At 12:30 we will be doing the four corner apron followed by a super simple table runner at 3:00! While Ann is teaching I will be serving strawberries to all comers!

On Tuesday we are starting a Sewing Machine Mastery class being taught by Hilma...if you have a machine that intimidates you or have always wanted to know how to use all the features of the machine this is the class for you! There is only room for one more person though!

Thursday night from 7 - 9 pm I will be teaching English Paper Piecing using plastic templates (Quilt Patis) - this is a great beginners technique or take along project for the cottage.

I am very busy cleaning house getting ready for our inventory counting at the end of the month. I have a huge clearance bin set up and am throwing all sorts of goodies into it... right now there are angelina fibers at 75% off, tonnes of panels for $2 and some clearance kits at 75% off. Things come and go quickly from the bin so be sure to look in to see if you can find any bargains.

Finally I think it is appropriate on Father's Day to thank my Dad for all the wonderful work he has done in the store. From building the fat quarter cart and ALL the shelves to doing the books and running around all over town doing errands he really has been the backbone of the store! Thanks Dad ... we love you!
